John Scalzi's interview took a different format than the usual Guest of Honor interview. There was no interviewer; Scalzi paced back and forth, shooting the breeze with the audience. He probably didn't say anything one wouldn't find on his blog. It's how he said those things that made him so entertaining. He acted out various stories from his life as little skits, from a Hugo winner's attitude to getting to know 16-year-old girls. He also commented on Neal Stephenson, openly admitted to stealing from other authors, and talked about why he could not afford to be as polemical in "Old Man's War" as Heinlein was in "Starship Troopers". Finally, he revealed an unexpected fact about himself.

on "Creating a character" panel.
Steven Brust was pretty funny. He calls immersion into a character (getting into a character's head space) "method writing". He does not subscribe to the myth that characters have their own will and are making the author do things that the author wasn't thinking of doing. He says he doesn't like when writers use it as a badge of honor. When a character doesn't want to do what you want them to do, that's actually your unconscious telling you that you're screwing up.
He also says: "Every girl I ever slept with found her way into my story, whether I know it or not. Sometimes years later I look at my stories and think, crap, that's her."
About writing fantasy series: in his view, he's writing his own fanfic. In his first book he created a world he can't get away from. So subsequent books set in that world are fanfic.

Once you've seen hundreds of manuscripts, you'll know exactly what lack of originality is.

On "Stump the Panel" the panelists are supposed to come up with mundane and science-fictional uses for objects supplied by the audience. Here's what Rhonda Eudaly, S. Andrew Swann, and Lou Antonelli imagined this thingy to be.
Rhonda. It's your entire supply of nutrients ready to eat.
S. Andrew Swann. It's a spaceship that has crash-landed.
Lou Antonelli:
-- mundane use: this is the eraser of #2 penclil after a guy messed up and crashed the pencil
-- SF-nal use: this is a hat that goes on the hat of a little guy that will make the planet complete and it will enter the age of Aquarius.

Lou. As a dragon is about to roast you... it could be a good commercial. A dragon breathes fire on you, a guy throws a handful of Tictacs into his mouth, the dragon munches of them and say: "minty fresh"! And the tagline of the commercial could be, so fresh it could stop dragon breath.
Andrew. These are alien seeds. You plant them and they grow... (little aliens?)
Rhonda. I was going to say, alien baby eggs. But that's like alien seeds.... Memorey crystals! You could store all your information. Little bitty flash drives. Data storage. They're great for espionage, because they look like breath mints.
