Nature walk with Spider Joe, 10/28/2007
CFI Austin / Secular Family Network nature walk with Spider Joe. Joe introduced kids to Spiders 101. He and the kids caught a few spiders, which he put in little boxes with magnifying glasses, all the better to see a spider's anatomy, and passed around before releasing them. This tour was for older kids, and indeed, the 4 kids that attended were of ages 5-8, but I brought Erika anyway.
Once she got over her shyness, Erika had reasonable fun and even got excited about spiders. That's funny, because at home she's afraid of them. In fact, she's afraid of anything remotely spider-shaped. If she sees a tangled piece of thread lying on the floor, with ends sticking out in all directions, she cries: Mama! Spider! If I pick it up and try to show her it's not a spider, she jumps back, shrieking. So it was interesting that she wasn't scared of the creatures we encountered along the path. Maybe it was because they were a safe distance away, in somebody else's hands or under the glass.
I did not get many pictures of spiders. One, to be exact. The rest were too small, and I have never tried macro photography. Besides, they all looked kind of the same to me... small and brown. ;-)

CIMG7932 Joe and jumping spider
One of the bugs Joe initially caught was a jumping spider. Joe tried to demonstrate that the spider spins a silk thread as it falls, to slow down its fall and keep from getting hurt. But, according to joe, the spider was "too jumpy" for that.

He put spiders he caught in those little boxes and passed them around, allowing the squeamish among us to view spiders at safe distance yet in great detail. :-)

CIMG7973 Joe passes a spider to Robin
They found a black / yellow garden spider, which wasn't really one of those spiders that live near the water. Joe said the spider was lost, so the kids picked it up and released it in the woods. Anyway, this was the only photogenic spider I saw on the tri
