Some of the panelists didn't think that humans would freak out all that much if we discover that aliens are coming to our system. After all, people weren't all that alarmed when atomic bomb was dropped, so this could be similar. Or, as Aaron de Orive put it, if we noticed aliens in Pluto's orbit, we probably won't freak out. If one day they pop up over New York City, we definitely will. Patrice Sarath, on the other hand, envisioned further-reaching consequences of discovery of intelligent aliens (especially if they were already in our Solar system): governments falling, stock market crashing, changes in religions. People would become tribal in the face of danger. She does not see a welcoming scenario, but rather a highly negative reaction.
